Dentures and Implant Supported Dentures

Dentures and Implant Supported Dentures

Dentures are the most commonly known tooth replacement method worldwide. These prosthetics can transform the lives of patients who have suffered from tooth loss. The effects of tooth loss are far-reaching. Without our teeth, we feel incomplete. Our daily lives are affected, too. Chewing food and speaking becomes cumbersome after losing teeth. Fortunately, Dr. Ake and our team treat tooth loss with lifelike prosthetics and compassion.

Types of Dentures

There are two types of dentures. The first type is reserved for patients who have suffered from the loss of all their teeth in an arch. A full denture can fit in either the upper or lower arch to replace all lost teeth. The second type, a partial, will replace missing teeth and fit in between existing biological teeth. Both types of dentures are removed daily for cleaning and overnight soaking.

Aside from how many teeth are replaced, the other major difference between partial and full dentures is how they stay in place. A conventional full denture stays in place by resting on and slightly over the gums. The curved shape of the jaw will hold them in place. Some patients, however, might be candidates for implant-supported dentures. Dental implants help improve the stability and longevity of dentures. When it comes to partials, however, these prosthetic teeth are attached to a retainer-like appliance that clasps on the backs of teeth. The clasping mechanisms will hold partials in place since they fit alongside biological teeth.

How Dentures Are Made

Dentures are made in laboratories by skilled technicians. A technician will construct dentures from lifelike materials such as porcelain to resemble the appearance of tooth structure and pink-colored acrylic to mimic the color of gums.

Making dentures first begins with our dentist determining their size and shape. Dentures must be custom made so that they fit over the gums and inside the mouth comfortably. The process to make dentures does take time but it is an investment well worth it. With dentures, patients can feel renewed confidence to smile and socialize with others. Having prosthetics increases oral function greatly, too.
